Bouldering taught me to fall better (also, debug better)

Nov 2025

There's a moment on a boulder problem, a few moves in, where you realize the beta you committed to isn't going to work — and you have to decide, mid-move, whether to fight for it or bail cleanly.

Debugging has the same moment. You've committed to a theory of the bug, you're three console.logs deep, and it's becoming obvious the theory is wrong. The instinct is to keep pushing because you've already invested the time. The better move, almost always, is to let go, reset, and look at the problem fresh.

Bouldering makes that instinct physical before it makes it intellectual. Falling well — controlled, not panicked — is a skill you drill on purpose. Turns out "controlled retreat" is just as trainable in a text editor as it is on a climbing wall.
